There is a charm about the forbidden that makes it unspeakably desirable. - Mark Twain
As a new grandmom, I am re-experiencing the charm of the forbidden. It has been challenging to be mindful of the difference between making "no" a game and making it a serious word. According to many experts, babies understand "right" and "wrong" before a year old. When my children were babies, my amazing pediatrician insisted that I understand this concept. She explained it like this - whether your child is reaching into a snack bag or whether they are ready to cross a busy street without you, they cannot understand the difference between the importance of "no." As a parent, "no" must always mean just that. It was one of the best pieces of advice I ever received.
